Dr. AKWEN, Charles Terseer

Personal Statement

Dr. Charles Terseer Akwen is a poet, dramatist, essayist and creator of cultural dialogues through Creative Writing and Performance. He obtained his B.A degree in English from the University of Ibadan; M.A degree in English Literature from the University of Lagos; M.B.A (Human Resource Management) degree from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Lagos. He is the author of several books among which are On this Land (Poetry) which was shortlisted for the 2022 Association of Nigerian Authors’ Poetry Prize; Tattoos of Bulletholes; (Poetry), shortlisted for the 2023 Association of Nigerian Authors’ Poetry Prize; Caged Inspiration (Poetry); AWASE (a Play) and Across the Strait (a Play). He is the curator of The Soyinka Spirit: Global Poems on Deep Reflection and Spoken Stories, (An Anthology of poems celebrating Wole Soyinka at 90). His creative works are greatly influenced by the African culture which has been hybridized along with the Asian and European literary traditions. He is the champion of what he calls the “spoken-story poetry” and critically associated his writings with environmental, socio-cultural, political, and human rights advocacy. He is the Secretary to the Creative Writing Programme at the University of Lagos, and the founder of Transcultural Writers’ Network. Dr. Charles TERSEER Akwen is the Convener of the African Association of Taiwan Studies, and an active member of the Association of Nigerian Authors, Lagos Chapter. His works have been translated into the Chinese, Japanese and Hindi Languages. His areas of teaching and research include Comparative Literature, Taiwan Studies and Creative Writing.
