Prof. OKEREGBE, Anthony Otome

Anthony Okeregbe, Ph.D, is a Professor of Philosophy and the Head of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Lagos (UNILAG). Born in Lagos on November 28, 1968, he received his early education in both Lagos and Ibadan. He earned his B.A. (Hons) in Philosophy from the University of Ibadan in 1990, followed by an M.A. in 1995 and a Ph.D. in 2004 from UNILAG. Prof. Okeregbe specialises in Applied Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy. He also holds a Certificate in Andragogy and Competency-Based Adult Learning Mechanisms from MDF Training and Consultancy in the Netherlands, as well as a Certificate in Basic Psycho-Trauma Healing Skills. His academic interests span Phenomenology, Existential Philosophy, African lifeworlds, African Social Ontology, and popular culture.

As Principal Investigator for the Lagos African Multiple Cluster of Excellence and Associate Researcher at the Institute of African and Diaspora Studies (IADS), UNILAG, Prof. Okeregbe has led research projects on African knowledge systems, sonic pedagogies, andragogy, urban childhood experiences, and popular culture. He was the Annual Theme Fellow (2024/2025) at the African Multiple Cluster of Excellence, University of Bayreuth, Germany, where he curated the thematic year on “Temporalities.” His other fellowships include: Catalyst Fellow, Centre for African Studies, University of Edinburgh (2020/2021); Fellow, Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies, University of Bayreuth (2022/2023; Fellow, Moi University African Cluster Centre, Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence (2023). His engagement with psycho-spiritual therapies and mental health has shaped his current research focus on African existential challenges and endogenous wellness methodologies.

Prof. Okeregbe is a member of the African Studies Association of Italy (ASAI) and an Associate Member of the Council for Research in Values and Philosophy (CRVP), Washington D.C., USA. He was co-editor, Nigerian Journal of Philosophy. University of Lagos, Lagos, from 2012-2014. Before entering academia, he served as the Sunday Features Editor at The Guardian newspaper in Lagos and was a Visiting Member of its Editorial Board from 2012 to 2023. He is widely published in academic books and journals, serves as an editorial consultant, and actively volunteers with community organisations and foundations.
