Personal Statement
Bosede Funke Afolayan (PhD) is a Professor of Comparative drama in the Department of English, University of Lagos, Nigeria. Besides teaching drama and creative writing courses, she is also a poet (Conversations, Malthouse, 2022) and a playwright. Her first play; Look Back in Gratitude was published in 2013 while the second, Once Upon an Elephant has been recommended for the WAEC Literature-in-English syllabus: African drama (2026-2030). Her new play entitled After Nora Left is in press.
Her areas of research are comparative drama, women studies and creative writing. She edited a collection of essays entitled Nigerian Female Dramatists: Expression, Resistance, Agency (Routledge, 2021), and is currently editing another one on Ahmed Yerima’s dramaturgy. Afolayan has over 56 journal articles, chapters in books published locally and internationally. She has attended conferences in Nigeria and abroad. She was the Chairperson of Women Writers Committee of PEN (Nigeria) between 2019 and 2023), She is a Commonwealth Fellow; a time she spent at the School of English, Workshop Theatre Unit of the University of Leeds, Leeds, United Kingdom in 2016
