Dr. OWOADE, Sunday Caleb

Dr Sunday Caleb Owoade earned his B.A. (Hons.) in Linguistics and Yoruba and an M.A. in Yoruba Literature from the University of Lagos, Nigeria, in 2014 and 2017, respectively. In 2024, Sunday obtained his MBA from the University of East London, United Kingdom, as well as a PhD in Anthropological Studies from Queen’s University Belfast, United Kingdom. He served as a Teaching Assistant in the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics at Queen’s University Belfast from January 2023 to June 2024. Currently, Sunday lectures in the Department of Linguistics, African and Asian Studies at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. His research interests include sociocultural anthropology, focusing on Yorùbá expressive cultures, identity and politics, indigenous rituals and festivals, gender performance, and the Yoruba indigenous healthcare delivery system. In 2020, Sunday was awarded the Nigeria Tertiary Education Trust Fund Scholarship, which supported his doctoral research in the United Kingdom for three years. That same year, Sunday and his research team secured a National Research Fund/TETFUND grant aimed at validating indigenous healthcare practices and establishing their relevance to the Nigerian healthcare system through a thorough analysis of the Minor Ifá Corpus concerning the treatment and cure of diverse diseases. In 2022, he received a HAPP PGR Research Support and Conference grant at Queen’s University Belfast for field research equipment expenses, enabling him to undertake 12 months of fieldwork in three Yorùbá kingdoms in Nigeria. Additionally, in 2023, he secured a HAPP PGR Research Support and Conference grant for participation in the SOAS GLOCAL AFALA conference held at the University of Nairobi, Kenya. Sunday is a member of the following professional associations and networks: the Royal Anthropological Institute (RAI) of Great Britain and Ireland, the Association of Social Anthropologists of the UK (ASA), the British Academy Early Career Researcher Network, and the Yoruba Studies Association of Nigeria (YSAN).
