About the Department of
European Languages and Integration Studies
The Department of European Languages and Integration Studies at the University of Lagos is a leading centre for language acquisition and cultural integration. We specialise in Russian, French, German and Spanish, blending linguistic mastery with the study of global intercultural dynamics. Our programmes prepare students for careers in diplomacy, trade, education and multinational enterprise.
Academic programmes
The Department offers Pre-Degree, undergraduate (B.A.) and postgraduate (M.A., M.T.F.L., M.T.L. and Ph.D) programmes. Core courses cover linguistics, literature, translation and stylistics, with electives in integration studies focusing on globalisation, ECOWAS and Francophone Africa. Students gain practical skills through language labs and immersion workshops. Special French modules serve students from the Science, Engineering, Business and Social Sciences faculties.
Faculty and leadership
Dr. John Olubunmi Faloju serves as Head of Department (hodelis@unilag.edu.ng, elis@unilag.edu.ng). The faculty includes native speakers, Ph.D holders and experts in world literatures and transnational issues, fostering original research in areas such as Francophone cultures and European-African relations.
Facilities and activities
Modern language labs, cultural events and webinars — such as a recent career options seminar with UNILAG’s Career Development Services — enhance learning. Partnerships enable exchanges with European universities.
Career prospects
Graduates excel as translators, diplomats, educators and executives, meeting Nigeria’s needs in multilingual environments. They contribute to international trade, the civil service and academia.
